SNG Daily 8-13-14

It was Wednesday today at SNG studio. First up I sculpted two sets of Vulcan ears today for Glenn Campbell and Tammy Klein. They are about half way there to being ready to mold.

Got some more digs in on the Skydiver. Got the guns mounted on the Sky. I had to make up the gun barrel bells. I got a bunch more painting done and those oval holes in the forward part of the diver. Remember they had to be blended in which is why I re did them.

Tomorrow I hope to finished topside so I can move on to the bottom. I am dancing from project to project as we have so many. But soon there will be lots of work going on for the movie.

The reason for all the pictures of the ears is to show the process of the sculpting. This week’s SNG Studio Episode 5 shows in the video an entire ear sculpture in one take.

SNG Daily 8-1-14

What a week. Do done and on its way to China. The Sixth Finger Mask done and shipped. Skydiver getting there. Lots of painting and blending left to do still. Perks for our movie backers are started. Martian started for our movie. All good stuff.
Next week I should have the paint job done on the Skydiver and the sculpture done on the Marian. This weekend more work on the story boards for “Martians Attack SNG.”
Tomorrow at the studio we will be casting Tammy Klein’s ears and Glenn Campbell’s. That’s right Glenn wants to be a Vulcan too. And thanks Glenn for offering to help us on Martians Attack SNG with effects. Glenn is a visual effects wizard and legend. Tammy has offered to help with sound effects. Thanks so much both of you.
Here are some pictures of the day. The Skydiver is still very rough and just getting its colors in place. Lots to do still.

SNG Daily 7-29-14

Today was spent mostly in town shipping. But we got back not too late in the day and I was able to get another couple of hours in on the Martian. Yes it has lips. And eye lids and this means it will have a lot more expression.
The eyes and lids are just for looks right now. I have to make up some actual eyes for the sculpture before I can finish it off. They need to be present in the sculpture and the mold so that when I make the core for the eventual under skull I will have an exact contour match for the lids themselves. You will see what I mean as we go through the steps. Most of you guys that have done this before know exactly what I mean. 😉
It’s still a rough. We are at what I call stage two out of four stages. The suit the Martian wears is a sort of Steam punk looking rig and have more of a military camo Desert Mars look to it.
More tomorrow.

SNG Daily 7-23-14

The Enterprise may not look much different to you from yesterday but there is one small difference. It’s done!
I managed all the other edge windows. 10 Forward is quite evident now. The officer’s lounge was a joke. They made these little round impressions in the deck for them. I carved in my own and made them the right shape. You would think as many times as that classic shot has been seen in the opening credits of TNG they would have got that right. But they didn’t.
She has a nice thick semi gloss clear coat on and the decals look painted on now. Based is finalized. All the phaser banks have been painted titanium gold. And the copper deflector is now copper with some Alclads. Last of the light leaks are fixed. Oh and the nacelles have had another coat of copper on them too.
We will get some beauty pics this week against green screen to play with and off she goes to her home in China Monday. On to the Skydiver!

Ok here it goes. I get all the rest of the decals on in record time. I say to myself, “Steve you can clear coat it tomorrow. You’re done.” Then I look at the Christie’s auction photos of the D one last time and it hits me. Where is 10 Forward? In fact where are all the fraking windows that line the saucer leading edge?
I check the model and the L.E. no windows. Not one even scored into the hull. I look at the lower section and it has them. But they are all over the map. Uneven. So I look at endless pictures of the D and get a feel for the windows. I mark them all on the top side L.E. of the saucer with a fine sharpie. I do the same for the lower saucer section.
Then using my special tool I proceed to scratch away the windows so some of them glow. But on the edge all they do is chip the paint and it’s not pretty. I get what I consider to be a less then thrilling job done and move on to the top section. This time there’s no scribes to scratch within. Horrible. Just awful.
What to do, sitting there in the darkened room. I look at the table and the tools there and one of my rat tail files jumps out at me with its sharp edge. I take it to the edge of the saucer and file. Bingo a perfect window and no chipping. In less than an hour the entire top saucer leading edge is done.
So tomorrow I’ll clean up and the lower saucer edge and do the same thing. I also started the few windows on the engineering section. You guessed it, AMT has no windows there either. Me fix.
She looks done in these pictures and she will be tomorrow. Honest.

SNG Daily 7-18-14

It’s been a busy weekend.  The Enterprise D finally has all the corrections done and the orange painted on the nacelles along with that coat of acrylic gloss clear for applying the decal. Don’t worry gang once the decals are on she gets a matt finish clear.

We are looking at Decals will take a day maybe a bit more and she’s done. We are looking at Wednesday for a finished model.

The skydiver has all her panel lines and they are all sanded down and smooth. Next up on Monday we cut a few drains and holes open and we can pain a base coat of a sort of gold brass color on. By the end of that week it’s my hope to have a paint job on her. Then we wait for the internals to arrive before I can finish her off.

It’s my hope to finish off both models this week coming up so Mary and I can get into full swing on the Movie project. We need to finish client projects first.

The opening on the new show is a temp. We have a more involved and more creative version on the horizon.

More on Monday!

Food for thought

It has come to my attention that the field for making and building models for collectors is in the process of being watered down. That is to say those builders who already have income and love building models are doing our work basically for cost. They love doing it and are willing to do it without making any profit.
If you go to any trained and experienced professional, you can expect to pay for that training and experience. Moreover, if that professional has a reputation, history and/or celebrity you can expect to pay even more. This is normal and should be understood. I worked with Gene Roddenberry, Robert Wise, Richard Edlund and other prominent names for very big movies. You can see my name in the credits. This means that when I build your model, you are getting both a well-made model and part of history.
This is a free county and we still have free enterprise. This is all good and we respect and support the system. It doesn’t change the fact that the price for building a model has been watered down so far as it is no longer profitable for us, as professionals, to pursue it.
I will still build models for a fair price for my expertise. I am going to leave the hobby model building to the hobbyist. It is a great hobby. For those who just want the model built for the lowest price they can find, I wish you good luck.
We will be shifting our attention and focus more towards film and TV work, creature effects, makeup, props, filmmaking, photography, CGI and After Effects. For the Movie Industry, I am always available.
For the Serious Collector, who wants the very best, we are always here for you.
