66 inch Enterprise model begins…

This model will be 5.5 feet long, half scale to the studio model at 11 feet. I’ve started the construction on the saucer first. Really the hardest part in this modelers opinion. Shape wise anyway. What I did was make a template the saucer section in profile out of model aircraft plywood. I then used this to cut a bunch of depron formers that will eventually circle all the way around the saucer. These will be bridged and squared up with more depron in the form of a flat ring.

The top part of the saucer is very flat at first before it begins to slope up making the curve. Perfect to lock all these formers in nice and level. Once that’s done I can start sheeting in the depron foam sheet. In the end I’ll epoxy glass the whole shape. Once this is done I can detail it. Scribe the window, lights, and other details. Final molds will be made out of GI 1000 RTV and epoxy glass mother molds.

It took a few days to get set up. Make plans and templates in Photo shop, print them out and start cutting. Tonight I was able to start adding the formers to the center hub which it removable from the building table.

Thought I’d take the first in progress building picture while wearing my WW2 flight officerssoft cap in honor of Matt Jefferies who Designed the Enterprise and flew B-17s in WW2. A real hero of mine.

More to come,

Steve
