Damn this is a big U-boat!

You really don’t get a true appreciation for this boat’s size until you see some nerd holding it. Heck it doesn’t even fit inside the 16:9 framing of this camera. I have her all ready to go in the pool this Sunday but my ballast weight won’t show up until Monday. So Tuesday I will trim her in the pool. It will take about 6-7 pounds of lead to keel her. Maybe not but we will fin out this week. Then I need to find a large public pool to test her in. If she passes there she can go to the lake.

Foo Fighters got 12 more new CGI shots this week and a few more to come next week. Then I’ll cut those shots in. Fame grabs soon.

OK. The big VIIC German U-boat is up next. It gets a dunk in the pool. Trimmed and tested. But this model is so large I will only be able to go forward and backward. And I can dive but to turn she needs a bigger pool or the lake.
Anyone have a big ass pool in the LA area I can use??? Let me know.

More on the Enterprise 99% done!

Enjoy the video. Next week there will be one more because this bird will be done! I have to paint the base, clear coat her and that’s about it. Now to let all those 100s of decals completely dry for the next few days!

If the video isn’t playing give it awhile You Tube is still processing it. Thanks!

CGI frame grab of th day

I’m doing a job for a client that included zooming in on the Earth from space. I had to build a new up to date Earth model today. The animation is rendering now at 1920×1080. One of the things CGI does so well is space effects. Our Earth is so beautiful. Everyone should see it from this point of view and maybe then we’d make Space Ships. Not war!

“My God. It’s full of decals!”

5 freaking days to add all the Aztec decals. It was grueling! I could have built and entire model in that time. Every square inch of this big model’s surface is covered in them. Now all I have to do is add the markings. You know. USS Enterprise and that sort of thing. But there’s a hell of a lot of them too! This model has every single marking the 7 ft miniature had. Yikes. Still that will take a day or so. Then I’m finished.
I have a customer build next. A 57 inch long RC Seaview. It will be easy after this one.

Here’s some pictures although at the small size it’s hard to see all the work. I’ll shoot a video soon.

Decals!!!!

This just blows away stencils and the other models of the Enterprise that came without these Aztec decals. I just started putting them on and it’s a breeze. More to come folks.

The Enterprise is back!

Finally fixed all those light leaks. Re-touching the white paint. Next to do all the painted details and last those many, many Aztec decals and she’s done?

Here’s a short video. You’ll notice the nacelles are sealed and seamed. If I ever have to get in there I can but it will cause me some work to fix afterwords. so I hope I never do. As I understand it LEDs have a long live. I just couldn’t stand the seams showing there. It was the only way.

Mercury is finished…and back to the Enterprise

Finally I’m finished with the Mercury Capsule. I’m back at the Enterprise and will finish her next.

Here’s some pictures of the finished capsule. I must say this is a really great model. Built one!

One thing about this model that will drive anyone nuts is the decals that go on the retro pack. Good grief what an ordeal. Everyone of those stripes are put on one at a time. Nearly, and I say nearly impossible. And it you look around the net you will find many a builder who did them half way or not at all. The real Friendship 7 had them! As did all of them after Liberty Bell. And if you think you can get away with Liberty bell or Shepard’s capsule to save yourself this grief think again. Their capsules didn’t have the window this one has. They were different and have to me modified and scratch built. You may loose all the work of doing the stripes but you gain the work of scratch building.

Models, models

Trying to get this Mercury capsule finished up before a customer build starts of the Seaview. Then I have another customer build to do of a German type 23 coastal U-boat from WW2.

The X-1 is finished. Well for now. I may do more to it. She’s kind of too pretty. Guess she was just painted right?

And the Mercury capsule is getting close. The interior was rather sparse so I added a lot of scratch built details like cable and conduits. Breaker boxes and other small parts inside it was missing. The astronaut has his base coat of silver. I placed the big decals on but now I need to ad all those small ones. Not to mention all those stripes on the retro pack! Yikes!

And tomorrow I’ll add all the small painted details the capsule had. Lucky for me I have good reference pictures of the real thing.

Got two more CGI shots of the lizard aliens for Foo Fighters. All week I’m doing additional shots that take hours to render. The end sequence just needed more fill and shots of the aliens I felt were missing.

All and all a good day.
